WHAT IS THE CENTER CITY 2020 VISION PLAN?
The Center City 2020 Vision Plan is a collaborative community planning process to guide the development of Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s urban core over the next decade.
WHY DOES CHARLOTTE NEED A PLAN FOR THE CENTER CITY?
Vision plans since the early 1960s have proven valuable in shaping Charlotte to best meet the needs of residents, businesses and visitors. Our community has evolved with exceptional outcomes and guided growth as a result of the 2010 Vision Plan. The entire regional community benefits from the health and vibrancy of Center City Charlotte.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PLAN?
The 2020 Vision Plan is a
collaboration between Charlotte Center City Partners, the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg
County. The process is
being overseen by a Steering Committee co-chaired by community leaders Ann
Caulkins and Harvey Gantt.
HOW MUCH WILL THE PLAN COST?
The total budget allocated is $750,000, and the three funding partners intend to bring the plan in under budget.
WHO IS CREATING THE PLAN?
The 2020 Vision Plan will be created by nationally-recognized urban planning and community design firm MIG, based in California, with partnership from three Charlotte companies: urban designers ColeJenest and Stone, transportation consultant Kimley-Horn & Associates and marketing communications firm Wray Ward as well as nationally recognized economics and marketing experts Economic Research Associates.
WHAT IS THE PLANNING PROCESS?
A community-wide
collaborative planning process is essential to identifying issues and guiding
the growth of the community. As a result, the first planning step is a
community workshop, to be held at 5:30
p.m. on October 21 at the Charlotte Convention Center.
There will be two additional community workshops, in the spring and fall of
2010, and residents will also be able to provide input through other
communications portals during the next 12 months.
HOW CAN RESIDENTS BE HEARD ON THEIR VISION FOR CHARLOTTE’S CENTER CITY?
Charlotte residents are encouraged to share their opinions,
which will be a crucial element to the plan’s development. Residents can attend
the community workshops, the first of which will be held Oct. 21, and
communications portals, such as this web site.
WHEN WILL RESIDENTS SEE THE PLAN?
The plan will be completed
and presented to the community for adoption in fall 2010.
WHAT IS CENTER CITY?
Center City is the urban core of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, typically described as Uptown and its surrounding neighborhoods. The Center City 2020 Vision Plan plan area includes Uptown, South End and other close-in neighborhoods just beyond the I-277 loop.
